Landscape Structures Responds to the Boom in Skateboarding and In-Line Skating with Skatewave™, A State-of-the-Art Modular Skatepark System

MINNEAPOLIS, March 19, 2001 – Skatewave, a new division of Landscape Structures Inc., has announced the creation of the Skatewave Modular Skatepark System, a state-of-the-art skatepark that is highly customizable, and easy to install and reconfigure. The nation’s leading provider of high-quality play equipment for municipal parks and schools, Landscape Structures has designed its Skatewave modular system as a high-excitement, low-maintenance solution to the enormous demand for skatepark facilities. With the addition of Skatewave, Landscape Structures is the first major manufacturer to offer customers a single-source solution for both commercial playground and recreational skatepark equipment.

There are more than 14 million skateboarders and in-line skaters in the United States, most of whom are between the ages of 8 to 18. However, according to the Skate Park Association of the United States, there are only approximately 600 skateparks in the U.S. Landscape Structures’ chairman, Steve King, says that the pressure on communities to provide safe, affordable outlets for these sports enthusiasts is intense.

“In nearly every community skaters and skateboarders have made the city streets, parking lots and retail environments their skateparks,” said King. This creates safety and maintenance problems for both the municipalities and private business owners.

Municipalities have seen the steady growth in these sports and they know that they need to provide fun and challenging venues for these kids. As a result, hundreds of new skateparks are already in planning and development stages across the country.”

Skatewave has designed its modular system to address the four most critical needs of park directors — flexibility, interchangeability, durability and safety – and the one preeminent need of enthusiasts: FUN.

The Skatewave system can be configured in an unlimited number of ways to fit the space requirements and site characteristics of any park. The components of the system can also be reconfigured from time to time to provide a new look and a different combination of challenges. Each “obstacle” is constructed from 11-12 gauge steel with a ride-friendly TekTrak™ powdercoat finish on the transitions and decks, TenderTuff® PVC-coated transition plates, and super-durable Permalene® side and back panels for long-term durability and minimal maintenance. The Skatewave system is also designed for maximum safety. There are no sharp corners or entrapment areas.

The individual system components range from ramps and rails, to quarter-pipes, jumps, pyramids, spines, mini half pipes, fun boxes and launch boxes. Once integrated into a complete system, these components allow enthusiasts of all skill levels to test themselves, and to move from one event to the next in a continuous exploration of all the challenges that makes this sport so expressive.
