The City of Trumann, Ark. (pop. 7,000), opened their long-awaited Skatewave® skatepark in October 2005. The grand opening ceremony began with a ribbon cutting by the mayor and Sharron Turman, Trumann’s Sports Coordinator and driving force behind the skatepark.
"Not every child plays sports like baseball, softball and basketball," Turman explained. "This project has been used by kids that did not previously have anything else to do. The skatepark has also taken the riders off the Post Office steps and the railings of local businesses."
After attending a KaBOOM! workshop to learn how to get community members involved, Turman developed an interest in skateparks. With the Mayor of Trumann’s support, Turman ventured out to see how much interest the kids had in a community skatepark. By talking with the local riders, she saw the excitement of having a place of their own.
Local riders and their parents had been involved with the project from the beginning. Monthly meetings kept them up-to-date on the process, and they were instrumental in convincing their parents to keep a $0.01 sales tax to help fund the park.
"The riders feel proud of the community skatepark," said Turman. "More experienced riders have even taken it upon themselves to teach younger kids."
