Hernando County Skateboard Complex at Pioneer Park
(Stewy’s Skate Park)

This “skatepark with a heart” is named after 12-year old Stewart Abramowicz, who died after being hit by a car while skateboarding in the street. His twin brother, Anthony, was also injured, but survived.

After Stewart’s death, his mother, Amber Costa, along with County Commissioner Diane Rowden, organized young riders into Kids Involved in Developing a Skatepark for Kids (K.I.D.s for Kids) and printed up T-shirts. They held spaghetti suppers, car washes and pancake breakfasts. The Hernando County Mining Association donated all the concrete for construction. In all, the group helped raise $250,000 for this skateboard complex.

Today, the once-seedy Pioneer Park at Talbot Circle and Pinehurst Drive is alive with the sound of skateboards and kids. Nearly 500 kids a week visit the skatepark. Even local neighbors approve. And local riders, kids often on the fringes of school activities, found themselves in the spotlight.

"You're one of those skatepark kids, aren't you? Some guy asked me," one skater said. "I've never been anybody before."
